Grup band ini berjaya selama hampir dua dekade. Pada 1970-an, formasi band mengalami perubahan dengan keluarnya Iskandar dan Rizal Arsad. Mereka lalu digantikan oleh Reynold Panggabean dan Charles Hutagalung. Kemahiran Charles dalam menulis lagu-lagu sentimentil membawa nama grup band ini melambung. The Mercy’s menjadi salah satu band Indonesia yang terkenal dan masuk dalam “The Big Five“. Tak hanya Charles, Rinto Harahap pun turut berkontribusi menuliskan lagu untuk The Mercy’s. Lagu ciptaan Rinto antara lain “Ayah”, “Love”, “Bunga Mawar” dan “Injit-Injit Semut”.
